Bränn Dailor over nieuw Mastodon-album

"We want the songs to be like movements in a symphony."

Naar verwachting komt Mastodon's debuut op nieuw label Warner Bros pas uit tegen het einde van de zomer in 2006. De formatie begon met schrijven van nieuwe nummers kort nadat het album "Leviathan" af was, en ontwikkelde flink wat nieuwe ideeën tijdens het touren.

Maar tijdens Ozzfest afgelopen zomer boekte de band pas echt creatieve vooruitgang, aldus Dailor:

"You can't really control when the ideas come. I always have a dictaphone handy, and [singer] Brent [Hines] and [guitarist] Bill [Kelliher] bring acoustic guitars everywhere, and if they come up with something messing around, we'll record it. We always keep our minds open. (...) We want the whole thing to flow together as one big piece of music, where the end of one song links up with the beginning of the next one. We want the whole experience to be like movements in a symphony."

Tegen de tijd dat Mastodon in oktober weer serieus begon met oefenen, hadden ze al tien nieuwe nummers in de steigers staan om verder uit te werken.

Hoewel het nog te vroeg is om exact te kunnen vertellen hoe het nieuwe album van Mastodon zal klinken, weet Bränn Dailor al wel dat de schijf "more progressive and thrashier" zal zijn. De drummer verklaart:

"We've been listening to a lot of newer King Crimson and getting off on that. But also, we toured with Slayer and listened to them every night for three months, and that's gotta have some sort of effect."

Mastodon is van plan om in februari de studio in de duiken met producer Matt Bayles en een maand uit te trekken voor de opnames.
