In memoriam: John Peel

Engelands beroemdste radio-DJ, John Peel, is vandaag op 65-jarige leeftijd overleden. Peel was met zijn echtgenote op vakantie in Peru toen hij aan een hartaanval bezweek.
Hij gaf stromingen als punk, reggae en hip-hop aandacht voordat ze mainstream werden en bood ook ruimte voor extreme muziekstijlen.
Het meest bekend werd de DJ met zijn "John Peel sessions". Hiervoor kregen de meest uiteenlopende bands een uitnodiging om exclusief voor zijn programma nummers op te nemen in een BBC studio. Zo kwamen onder meer Dick Dale, Explosions In The Sky, The Hives, The White Stripes, Solex, Napalm Death en Carcass in zijn radioprogramma langs.
Ook bands als Smashing Pumpkins, Stiff Little Fingers, Prong, The Smiths en The Meteors brachten hun "Peel Sessions" uit. Zelfs legendarische iconen als Jimi Hendrix en Thin Lizzy maakten graag gebruik van John Peels uitnodiging naar de studio te komen.
In een interview met B92.net verklaarde Peel zijn liefde voor extreme muziek:
"I quite like death metal because it's just so extreme and so grotesquely tasteless. I think bad taste is quite important. You get these people who will occasionally write to the BBC and complain when I've played death metal and there was this case in America where some woman was murdered by this couple that were into black magic and Satanism but then you say, 'Well, how many people have been killed in the names of the authorised and established religions?' — a great many more. So the idea that you object to these things because they've got these silly Satanist lyrics is just nonsense I think."
Mark Thompson, algemeen directeur van de BBC, verklaarde vandaag in een reactie op het onverwachte overlijden:
"We are all very shocked and saddened by the news of John's death. He was one of the giants of radio and will be missed, not just by everyone at the BBC, but by millions of listeners of all ages."
