Minor Threat: Nike heeft ons bestolen

In de campagne "Major Threat" gebruikte de sportschoenenfabriant de stijl en iconen van Minor Threat zonder toestemming van Dischord Records, dat wordt gerund door voormalig frontman Ian MacKaye. Het label bezit de rechten op zowel de opnames als het artwork van de band.

Aan pitchforkmedia.com verklaart het label desgevraagd:

"They [Nike] stole it and we're not happy about it. Nike is a giant corporation which is attempting to manipulate the alternative skate culture to create an even wider demand for their already ubiquitous brand. Nike represents just about the antithesis of what Dischord stands for and it makes me sick to my stomach to think they are using this explicit imagery to fool kids into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission. It's disgusting."

Wie wil, kan zelf vergelijken; zowel het oorspronkelijke artwort als de Nike-variant zijn rechts weergegeven.

Nike zou kunnen beweren dat het gaat om een parodie, maar het bedrijf heeft er tot dusver de voorkeur aan gegeven nog niet te reageren op het commentaar.

Minor Threat, met Jeff Nelson achter de kit, bestond tussen 1980 en 1983, maar groeide in deze korte periode uit tot invloedrijke band.
